Honor the Dead by Helping the Living
Buddy Poppy Chairman: Megan McGrath
The VFW Auxiliary’s "Buddy"® Poppy program serves as a cornerstone of the organization’s mission to honor fallen service members while providing vital support to those still serving. As the official memorial flower of the VFW for over a century, the poppy was inspired by the World War I poem "In Flanders Fields" and represents the blood shed by American troops. Since the first nationwide distribution in 1922, the VFW has maintained exclusive trademark rights to the name "Buddy"® Poppy, ensuring this specific symbol remains a dedicated tribute to the sacrifices made by the military community.
A major component of this program involves organizing "Buddy"® Poppy drives to distribute these memorial flowers throughout local communities, raising public awareness of their significance. The donations collected during these drives are used to aid veterans, service members, and their families who are in need, offering a direct way for the public to contribute to their well-being. Additionally, donations help support the VFW National Home, ensuring that the legacy of the poppy continues to offer a lifeline to the families of those who have served.
